Lucas Oil 100 Promises
High Octane Excitement
HALIFAX, NS (May 21, 2008) - After a looooong winter off-season, Maritime racers and race fans are counting the minutes until Saturday's season opener for Scotia Speedworld and the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour: the Lucas Oil 100.
The wait will have been worth it - with plenty of high octane excitement - on the track and off.
Besides an awesome expected entry list of 33 top CARQUEST Tour drivers, Lucas Oil will have two drag cars on hand where fans will have the chance to see one up close and the other in action. Boo King and Lynn Cormier, drivers of the Lucas Oil-sponsored dragsters, will both be at Scotia Speedworld for the Lucas Oil 100.
Defending race winner and inaugural series champion Wayne Smith is among the record number of pro stock racers expected for the event, along with fellow former series champions Rollie MacDonald and defending series champion Shawn Tucker.
With 33 entries, the series qualifying procedures will become even more important; indeed a race within a race - as each driver strives to make the starting lineup for the feature.
Lynn Cormier and her Lucas Oil drag car will be at Scotia Speedworld May 24, along with fellow Lucas Oil dragster Boo King, and his car. |
The first round of qualifying is the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials where each driver makes two laps with his speed being recorded by the series electronic timing equipment, with their fastest circuit being their lap of record. The nine drivers at the top of the chart in the time trial round will be automatically locked into one of the first nine starting spots on the grid for the 100-lap feature race - but must first compete in a 10-lap heat race in which their finishing position determines the feature starting order, i.e. finish first in the heat, start first in the feature...
Three more 10-lap qualifying heats, for the drivers that finished 10th and back in time trials, will see the top three finishers from each heat advance to the feature. Those still not locked into a starting spot on the feature grid will compete in a "B" Feature - with the finishing order for it, along with as many as four provisional spots - determining the balance of the 26-car starting lineup for the Lucas Oil 100.
The Wallace Equipment Hobby Stocks and the Maritime Legends Tour will provide racing action between the pro stock segments. Maritime recording artist John Gracie will sing the national anthem.
The box office and grandstand gates open Saturday at 3 p.m.; Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials start at 5:10 p.m., with racing at 6 p.m.
