Wayne Smith Wins First Leg of Triple Crown Series

(Halifax, NS, July 19, 2009) Wayne Smith of Timberlea, NS in his Jetco Contracting Chevrolet Impala won the IWK 250 presented by Steve Lewis Auto Body at Riverside International Speedway, located near Antigonish, NS on Sunday afternoon. Smith had to fight off Kent Vincent of Crapaud, PE until the last 0.174 seconds. David Reutimann from Zephyrhill, Florida finished third. Greg Proude of Springvale, PE and Craig Slaunwhite of Terence Bay, NS rounded out the top five.

Thirty nine drivers unloaded into Riverside's infield Saturday morning but only thirty eight participated in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials after Fredericton, NB's Matt Harris put his Matt Harris & Son Inc Ford Fusion into the wall on turn three in the first half hour of practice. Regan Smith had the fastest time, with a time of 14.301 seconds (100.692 mph). The remainder of the day's schedule was postponed until the following day due to inclement weather. All drivers returned on Sunday — including NASCAR superstars David Reutimann and Regan Smith — except Kris Fournier of Charlottetown, PEI who couldn't pilot his Taylor's Garage Dodge Charger due to a previous engagement.

Shawn Turple of Enfield, NS won the Dartmouth Dodge Dash for Cash featuring the top ten finishers in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials, which awarded him the coveted Pole Position to start the 250 lap Main Feature. Dave O'Blenis of Boundary Creek, NB, John Flemming of Halifax, NS, and Mike Stevens of Riverview, NB each won a LiteCo heat race, while Jonathan Hicken of Brudenell, PE won the 30 lap B Feature which was his last chance to qualify for the Main Feature.

Regan Smith of Cato, NY won the Coast Tire Most Laps Led Award after leading 124 laps of the race. Over 6,000 fans saw 11 cautions and a one hour rain delay interrupt the race which took over three hours to complete.

The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour returns to action next Saturday, July 25 for the re-scheduled Parts For Trucks 100 at Speedway 660 in Geary, NB. Racing starts at 7pm with Time Trials starting at 6:10pm. Gates open at 5pm.
