Sommerville Takes Parts For Trucks 100 At Speedway 660

(Halifax, NS, July 24, 2010) – It was Lonnie Sommerville in his AE McKay Builders Chevrolet Impala of Saint John, NB who crossed the line first after 100 laps of racing on Saturday night at Speedway 660 just outside of Fredericton. Sommerville raced from the back of the field twice and took advantage of a late race caution that saw him have to overcome Craig Slaunwhite (Terence Bay, NS), Shawn Turple (Enfield, NS), and Shawn Tucker (Fredericton, NB), in a “green, white, checkers” situation in order to take the honours. After the final laps were run, it was the Rockico Truck & Trailer Impala piloted by Tucker coming in second followed by Slaunwhite in his Halifax Glass & Mirror Impala. Turple’s Dexter Construction Impala crossed the line just ahead of Timberlea’s Wayne Smith in his Jetco Contracting/ICI Paints Impala who rounded out the top five.

Turple, who started 5th and was the only top 5 finisher to start in the top 5, was dominant throughout the race after quickly gaining the lead at lap 20. He held onto the lead until lap 75 when he then raced hard with Slaunwhite as they swapped the lead a number of times. This awarded Turple with the Ledwidge Lumber Halfway Award as well as the Scotia Emergency Most Laps Led award. Turple led a total of 69 laps during the race. The EIT Race Radios Rookie of the Race was Jerome Kehoe who came home in 10th place.

Qualifying kicked off the evening’s events with Springvale, PE’s Greg Proude rocketing his APM / Atlantic Dodge Dealers Charger around the 1/3 mile oval in just 13.740 seconds. After the top ten drivers duked it out in the ten lap Dartmouth Dodge Dash For The Pole, Chris Hughes of Brackley Beach, PE led the field into the Parts For Trucks 100 Main Feature. Sommerville and Slaunwhite won their respective heats which determined the remainder of the 27 car field.

The next event for the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour is the Lucas Oil 100 at Oyster Bed Speedway on the spectacular Prince Edward Island.
