Pro Stock Tour Highlights Atlantic Cat 250 Weekend at Scotia Speedworld!
(Halifax, NS, August 9, 2012) The Atlantic Cat 250, Halifax’s most anticipated stock car racing weekend of the season, returns to Scotia Speedworld this Friday and Saturday for two days of full throttle excitement! The two day event will attract over 5000 fans and the best stock car drivers from the Maritimes and abroad. Friday night the Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman will kick things off as they go head to head on the 3/10th mile oval for 100 laps in the Dartmouth Dodge 100. On Saturday race fans will see the stars of the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour battle for 250 grueling laps in the weekend’s main feature, the Atlantic Cat 250, which has a posted purse of almost $50,000.00! Gates open at 5:00 PM on Friday, qualifying for the Dartmouth Dodge 100 will begin at 7:30 PM. Gates open at 2:00 PM on Saturday with qualifying for the Cat 250 at 4:00 PM. Weekend passes are on sale now at Ticket Atlantic.
The Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman will take centre stage on Friday night with the Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman 100. Dean Clattenburg, who originally hails from Dartmouth, will make his first "home track" start in over ten years on Friday evening. Clattenburg got his racing career kick-started at Scotia Speedworld before moving to the MASCAR circuit and eventually to North Carolina, where he currently resides making a living building race cars. Clattenburg will drive the No. 15 machine out of the Alexander racing stable. Frankie Fraser (Shubenacadie) will also make an appearance in the Dartmouth Dodge 100 piloting Jeff Dillman’s No. 0. Fraser will be going for a record-breaking fourth win in the 100 lap event.
Saturday the stars of the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour will take over the oval for the weekend’s main feature, the Atlantic Cat 250. 26 drivers will have a shot at the prestigious Cat 250 title on Saturday night including US short track hot-shoes Mike Rowe (Turner, ME) and Cassius Clark (Farmington, ME). Mike Rowe, a two-time Cat 250 winner (2007, ’05) will be in the No. 10 car prepared by Steve Henderson. Cassius Clarke, who also has a Cat 250 win on his racing resume (2010), will pilot the No. 13 King Racing entry for the fourth time this season. The competition for the Americans will be stout as they will have to beat some of Canada’s best racers to add another Cat 250 title to their already impressive list of accomplishments.
Only four races remain on the 2012 Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour schedule and the championship battle is heating up! John Flemming (Halifax), a three-time Tour Champion sits atop the current standings along side Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell, PE). Hicken was victorious in last weekend’s Advance Rentals 150 which garnered him top points, unlike Flemming who had a motor let go during the race which relegated him to a 16th place finish. Both drivers are now deadlocked in first with 1527 points. Two other past champions remain in the title hunt heading into the Atlantic Cat 250. 2009 Champion Shawn Turple (Enfield) sits third, just five markers behind Hicken and Flemming. Hot on Turple’s heels is three-time Tour Champion Shawn Tucker (Fredericton, NB) who holds down fourth, just six points behind Turple and 13 back of the leaders. Donald Chisholm is in fifth position with some work to do as he is 40 points out of the lead, but there is plenty of racing left in the season for Chisholm and other drivers to make their move on the current leaders.
If you can’t make it to Scotia Speedworld this weekend be sure to tune into Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, channel 157 Sports Express Live for flag-to-flag coverage of the Atlantic Cat 250. Joe Chisholm and the crew from Race Time Radio will be on air with full event coverage starting at 7:00 PM AST.
